Umbrette

What it does

Umbrette lives in the menu bar and puts a soft shade over everything on screen except the window you are working in, so it stands out and the rest steps back: for deep work, for tidy screenshots and demos, and for easy evenings. Click the icon to dim; click it again to bring the whole screen back.

• Dim or blur, with a depth you set and a tint: neutral, warm, cool or your own colour.
• The whole app or only the front window stays bright, and the light follows you as you switch apps and windows, with a smooth fade.
• Rules for your apps: never dim while a video player is in front, keep a few apps lit together, or let small helpers take the focus without moving the light.
• Evenings: dim on a schedule, with a shade that leans warm as the night goes on.
• More than one display: dim the others whole, or keep each display's own front window bright.
• Made for the Mac: a Focus filter, Shortcuts actions, an optional keyboard shortcut and launch at login.

Privacy in one paragraph

Umbrette asks for no permission at all, not Accessibility and not Screen Recording. It reads only the position and size of the windows on screen, which macOS gives every app, and never their titles or what is in them. It has no network access, no account and no tracking.
