Common questions

Where is the panel?

A click on the menu bar icon dims and undims. Right-click it, or Control-click it, for the panel with the depth, the style, the tint and what stays bright. Scrolling on the icon changes the depth.

A video or a photo editor gets dimmed.

Open the panel while that app is in front and choose Never dim, or set a rule in Settings ▸ Apps. While an app with that rule is in front, nothing is dimmed.

A menu, a sheet or a popover of the front app is dimmed.

Menus are always above the shade. With Front window chosen, sheets and popovers that hang over the front window stay bright too; if one does not, choose Whole app, which keeps every window of the app in front bright, and please tell us which app it was.

Does it need Accessibility or Screen Recording?

No. Umbrette reads only where the windows are, which macOS allows every app without asking, and never their titles or contents.

How do I dim with a Focus?

In System Settings, choose Focus, then a Focus, then Add Filter, and pick Umbrette. It dims while that Focus is on and stops when it ends.
