Probette

What it does

Probette is a media inspector. Open a video, audio or image file and the first line says what it is, in words you can read at a glance:

• The summary first. Badges for 4K, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision, Atmos, 10-bit and more; the duration, size and overall bitrate; and every raw field one click or tap away.
• Every track. Video (codec, profile and level, size, frame rate, bit depth, chroma, colour, mastering display and light levels, Dolby Vision profile), audio (channels and layout, sample rate, bit depth, bitrate, language), subtitles, chapters and attachments.
• Metadata. Tags, cover art, chapters, and EXIF from photos, with GPS shown as numbers only: a map would need the internet.
• Compare and export. Two files side by side with the differences highlighted; copy the summary or export it as text, JSON or CSV; a whole folder in one table, exported as CSV.
• Where you are. On the Mac, a Quick Look preview in Finder (press Space on a video or audio file) and Open With; on iPhone and iPad, the Files app and Share ▸ Probette Info; on Android, Open with and Share from any app.

Formats

MP4, MOV, M4A, M4V, 3GP and fragmented MP4; Matroska and WebM; MPEG-TS and M2TS; AVI; MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis and Opus, WAV, RF64, BW64, AIFF, CAF, AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3 and DTS; JPEG, HEIC, AVIF, PNG, APNG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, DNG and BMP. Probette reads each file itself, so the facts are exact and the same on every device, and it never changes your files.

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later; on iPhone and iPad, iOS and iPadOS 17 or later; on Android, Android 8.0 or later. One purchase covers Mac, iPhone and iPad; the Android version comes from Google Play.

Privacy in one paragraph

Probette never connects to the internet. The files you open stay on your device. There is no account, no tracking and no analytics, and no data is collected. The full privacy policy says the same at more length.
