Common questions
Which files can Probette read?
Video: MP4, MOV, M4V, 3GP, fragmented MP4, Matroska (MKV), WebM, MPEG-TS, M2TS and AVI. Audio: MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis and Opus, WAV, RF64, BW64, AIFF, CAF, M4A, AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3 and DTS. Images: JPEG, HEIC, AVIF, PNG, APNG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, DNG and BMP. Probette tells a file by its contents, not its name.
What do the badges mean?
4K, 1080p and the like come from the picture size. HDR10 is a PQ picture of 10 bits or more; HDR10+ adds dynamic metadata; HLG is hybrid log-gamma; Dolby Vision shows the profile (8.1 means an HDR10-compatible base layer). Atmos is Dolby's object audio in E-AC-3.
Where are the raw fields?
Click (or tap) a track to show its table of every field Probette read, as the file has it. The Container section lists the file's own structure.
Why is there no map for photo locations?
A map would have to be downloaded, and Probette never connects to the internet. The latitude, longitude and altitude are shown as numbers you can copy.
How do I turn on the Quick Look preview on the Mac?
Open Probette once. If pressing Space in Finder still shows the usual preview, check System Settings ▸ General ▸ Login Items & Extensions ▸ Quick Look and make sure Probette is on.
How do I use it from another app on iPhone, iPad or Android?
In Files, Photos or any app that shares a file, tap Share and choose Probette Info: the summary appears right there. To keep the file in view, open it in the Probette app from the Files app instead. On Android, pick Probette from Open with or Share in any app, and the file opens in Probette.
Some facts are missing or say “estimated”.
Some files don't record everything (a raw MP3 or AAC stream has no duration of its own, so it is measured), and damaged or unfinished files are read as far as they go. Probette says so on the summary card.
