Nightjar for macOS · last updated 1 October 2026
The short version
Nightjar collects nothing about you, sends nothing anywhere, and has no account. It has no network access at all, so nothing could leave your Mac even if the app tried.
What the app reads
To decide whether to keep the Mac awake, Nightjar reads, on your Mac and only while it is running:
- Whether the power adapter is connected and the battery level.
- How many external displays are attached, and the names of mounted volumes.
- The bundle identifiers of running applications, and which one is in front.
- The list of power assertions held on this Mac, so the panel can show what else is keeping it awake.
- How long the Mac has been idle, but only while Hold off the screensaver is switched on.
None of this is recorded, transmitted or kept. It is read fresh every couple of seconds, used to make one decision, and discarded.
What is stored, and where
Your settings — which mode you chose, the default duration, your conditions and battery rules — are stored in the app's own sandbox container on your Mac, by macOS, the same way any Mac app stores preferences. Deleting the app removes them.
When closed-lid support is on, Nightjar writes a short-lived permission file into a container shared with the helper. It contains an expiry time, a heartbeat time, and the battery conditions under which it stays valid. It contains nothing about you, and it is removed when the feature is switched off.
Permissions
Accessibility or Input Monitoring is requested only if you switch on Hold off the screensaver, and only then. With it, Nightjar posts an empty modifier key — no cursor movement, no typed characters, no reading of anything you type. Switch the feature off and the permission goes unused.
The closed-lid helper asks for an administrator password once, at install, because it puts a small background service in place. That is macOS asking, not the app.
Notifications are requested only if you switch on Warn when the battery gets low. Nightjar uses them for that warning alone, shown on your Mac.
No tracking of any kind
There is no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier and no third-party SDK. Nothing is shared with anyone, because nothing is collected in the first place.
Children
Nightjar is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
