Common questions
Why can't my Mac open winmail.dat?
Some mail programs send a message in their own format, TNEF, and wrap the real contents (the formatted text, pictures and attachments) in a file named winmail.dat. Mail on the Mac and iPhone can't read that format, so you see only the file. Open it with Lettrette to see the message and get the attachments out.
How do I turn on Quick Look previews?
On the Mac, open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions › Quick Look, and turn on Lettrette. Then select a winmail.dat or .msg file in Finder, or an attachment in Mail, and press Space.
How do I open an attachment from Mail on iPhone or iPad?
Touch and hold the attachment (or tap it), tap the Share button, then choose Lettrette. If it's not in the row of apps, scroll to the end and tap More to find it.
Can I convert many messages at once?
Yes, on the Mac. Choose File › Batch Export… to pick several messages, or a whole folder, and export them all as EML, as PDF, or just their attachments. On iPhone and iPad, messages are exported one at a time.
Sample files to try
Download the sample files to see what Lettrette shows: messages with pictures and attachments, a meeting invitation and a contact card. Everything in them is made up.
A message looks wrong. What can I do?
Please tell us what you see. If the message contains nothing private, attaching the file to your email helps most; if it does, a description or a screenshot of the problem is enough. Never send a file with private contents.
